A low-top style that's been around for decades: matte next to smooth, on a gum sole, nothing more.

These retro trainers for men follow the classic German Army Trainer silhouette. That's the low, narrow trainer with a rounded toe, a wide T-shaped side panel and a flat gum sole you've seen for decades. Precisely because there's no thick sole, no logo and no bold accent, the style goes with almost everything already hanging in your wardrobe.

The upper pairs a smooth leather look with a soft suede look. The toe, the side panel, the lace flap and the heel cap are matte, while the rest of the upper is smooth. Both parts share the same colour, so you notice the difference mainly in the sheen and texture. The seams along every transition are stitched in the same shade, keeping the shoe looking calm.

How to style them

The white version is the easier of the two. The smooth part is off-white and the matte parts are a shade greyer, making the shoe look softer than a stark white trainer and less prone to looking dirty. Wear it with chinos in sand or olive with a linen shirt, or with light trousers if you want to look a bit smarter. The gum sole adds just enough warmth to an otherwise cool colour scheme.

The black version is the evening option. Black on black, with only the gum sole and white laces as contrast, works well with dark trousers and a fine-knit jumper, and also works under a suit if you leave the tie at home. Size and fit

Note: this style runs small. Order one size larger than you'd normally wear, and if you're unsure between two sizes, choose the larger of the two. The style ranges from EU 38 to 46 and is worn unisex.

In the size chart on this page, you can convert every size to foot length in centimetres, from 24 cm at size 38 to 28 cm at size 46. Ideally measure your foot at the end of the day, standing, wearing the sock you'll wear with the shoe, and compare that length with the chart. This is more accurate than relying on your usual size.

Care

Treat the suede-look parts before first wear with a spray suitable for suede and nubuck. Then brush them dry with a soft suede brush, always in the same direction, so the nap stays smooth. Keep the shoes away from abrasives and anything containing alcohol, such as perfume and solvents. If they get wet, let them dry completely at room temperature and away from the heater before cleaning them. Clean the gum sole with a product specifically meant for rubber. Not machine washable.
